The lexical approach is a kind method to teach foreign language with stressed abbreviation for sentences. This method was introduced by M. Lewis (1990) which state that “to make up a larger part of discourse than unique phrases and sentences”. The lexical approach is focus on ideas and also produce lexical phrase. Student should to know and understand how to produce lexical phrase in the classroom.
English grammar that mostly peoples using at the moment are comes from 2 different views, that is traditional grammar and modern grammar. An traditional grammar is a types of lexis that people uses for long time ago and the utility is always use “should be” in the sentence. In the lexical approach, the usefulness of traditional grammar is located in the abbreviation of sentence, such as cleverer (cle-ver-rer), handsome (hand-some), and smarter (smar-ter). However, modern grammar is a kind of lexis that spoken by native peoples in their sentences. The characteristic of this grammar is always uses modals in each sentence, such as I don’t have nothing.
The implementation of lexical approach in the classroom is might some weakness, such as student spent much time to determine the abbreviation of sentence. Also, student is able to determine and know what is verb, prefix, suffix and other components in the sentence.
